Punjab to have its own AIIMS in Jalandhar, IIM & cancer hospital in Amritsar

New Delhi, June 19: To provide better and affordable healthcare to people of Punjab, the Union government had agreed to set up an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Jalandhar district while a cancer hospital will be established in Amritsar. This was announced during the meeting of Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal with the health minister Dr Harshvardhan in New Delhi on Thursday.

Badal said the state government would provide 200 acres of land free of cost to the Centre for this project. Assuring support and cooperation to the CM, Dr Harshvardhan said the Centre would set up the state-of-the art medical institute in Punjab. He said once the proposal regarding the allotment of land was finalized by Punjab, the Centre would initiate steps to bring the project on the ground.

Raising another issue, CM Badal urged the health minister to expedite release of funds worth Rs 120 crore, already sanctioned by the Centre, for setting up State Cancer Institute at Government Medical College, Amritsar. He also sought intervention of the Union minister to take up the case for increasing the seats for MBBS and PG courses in Punjab’s medical colleges with the Medical Council of India to overcome the shortage of doctors in the state.

Flagging up the issue of drug menace in Punjab, the CM sought the support of Union health ministry in tackling the grave problem engulfing the youth of the state, to set up advance drug de-addiction centres in Punjab state with adequate manpower, logistics and infrastructural backup for detoxification and rehabilitation of drug addicts. Badal sought financial grant of Rs 200 crore to cope up with the crisis due to drug menace.

The CM also pleaded Dr Harsh Vardhan that the Centre allowed admissions to the Government Ayurvedic College Patiala. He urged that Punjab’s small and marginal farmers be covered under the centrally sponsored “State Illness Fund”. Under the scheme, Rs 1.5 lakh is given to BPL patients for treatment of terminal diseases.

In another meeting with Union Human Resource Development Minister Mrs. Smriti Zubin Irani, Prakash Singh Badal sought her personal intervention to establish Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and World Class Central University at Amritsar for offering huge opportunities of higher education to the Punjabi youth for their gainful employment.

Mr. Badal requested the Union Minister for sharing 50% of the non recurring and recurring costs of the state run scheme to impart free education in 11th and 12th standard to the students who secured 80% or more marks in class 10th in the specially established six residential schools across the state. The total investment incurred on these schools was Rs 150 crore and the annual recurring expenditure would be Rs 45 crore.
Responding to the demands raised by the Chief Minister, Mrs. Irani said that she would get all the issues involved in today’s meeting thoroughly examined in a meeting of her Ministry’s Secretaries along with the officers of school and higher education before taking a final decision on them.
