Police have handcuffed a man who was threatening to set himself alight at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship building on the corner of Spring and Lonsdale streets in the city.
A police spokeswoman confirmed the man had threatened self-harm and police had negotiated with him.
He had reportedly doused himself in petrol. Police entered the foyer of the building around 5.26pm and handcuffed the man.
At about 5:43 pm, police and a Metroplitan Fire Brigade crew led the man into an ambulance.
A police spokesman said the situation had been resolved, and “no one was harmed”.
Earlier, a MFB spokeswoman said they were called to the scene to assist police about 3.26pm on Monday.
“We have two trucks and eight crew standing by,” she said.
The firefighters were now inside the building cleaning up the residue.
Part of Spring Street remains cordoned off to traffic.
