Lovepreet Singh, an Amritdhari Sikh youth belonging to the Dalit community of Ratta Khera village in Sangrur district, committed suicide under mysterious circumstances a few hours after being interrogated by the Central Investigation Agency (CIA) in Chandigarh.
It is believed that Lovepreet Singh has committed suicide due to the mental pressure being exerted by the UAPA Act. Lovepreet Singh was summoned by the National Investigation Agency of India on July 13 to the NIA office at Burail Jail in Chandigarh for questioning in connection with a case.
According to the summons issued on July 10, Lovepreet Singh was to be questioned in a case registered on October 19, 2018 at Sultanwind police station in Amritsar city. The case was registered under the UAPA Act.
It may be recalled that Lovepreet Singh was found dead on the night of July 13 at Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Mohali. Rajinder Singh, manager of Gurdwara Manb Sahib, told media that Lovepreet Singh had taken a room to stay on the evening of July 13. He said that around 9 pm, a sevadar saw Lovepreet Singh lying dead in the room and informed the police. By the time the police came and broke down the door of the room, Lovepreet Singh was dead.
Manager Rajinder Singh said that the handwritten letter of Lovepreet Singh which was circulating on social media was also found from his body. In the letter, Lovepreet apologised to his family for committing suicide.
Sukhpal Singh Khaira, an MLA who has been raising his voice against the UAPA law known as the Draconian Law for the last few days, reached Lovepreet Singh’s house in Ratta Khera village with his colleagues.
He demanded an impartial inquiry into the matter and blamed the interrogating NIA officers.
