Police in India have discovered the body of a pregnant Gold Coast nurse, Ravneet Kaur kidnapped while visiting her parents, with her husband now suspected of planning her murder.
29-year-old Ravneet Kaur left the Gold Coast in February with her four-year-old daughter to visit family.
Ravneet Kaur, from the Gold Coast, had been missing since March 14 when she was allegedly abducted in the Bagge Ke Pipal village. She went missing after reportedly being snatched off the streets while on a video call with her husband back in Australia.
Police have confirmed her body was pulled from a canal near Punjab on Monday night.
Gurcharan Singh, Ariffke police station in-charge, told the Hindustan Times that Ms Kaur’s husband Jaspreet Singh is suspected of hatching the plan to murder his wife because he was having an affair.
“On the complaint of Ravneet’s father Harvinder Singh, we have booked her husband Jaspreet Singh, a resident of Chandigarh who is settled in Australia.”
“Harvinder told police that Jaspreet had developed illicit relations with a girl called Kiran in Australia. Despite Ravneet’s repeated pleas, Jaspreet was not ready to end his affair. To get rid of his wife, Jaspreet plotted her murder with his paramour’s help.”
Police in India will now attempt to extradite Jaspreet back to India.
However he has not been seen on the Gold Coast for several days.
Speaking to Nine News last week, Jaspreet said he “just wants his wife back”, but says he wouldn’t travel to India because of fears for his own safety.
It’s understood he has dual citizenship and had plans to travel to Canada.
So far, one woman has been arrested over the murder, while a second woman believed to be from the Gold Coast left India for Australia the day after the alleged kidnapping.
Ms Kaur’s colleague of six years, Kerrie Hawker, said she was devastated to hear the news.
‘She had a heart of gold, she wouldn’t hurt anyone. She was so loving and her smile would light up a room. It was the most beautiful smile,’ she said.
The Gold Coast Sikh Council, as the peak representative body for Sikhs of the Gold Coast, has offered its condolences to Ravneet’s family and friends.
