Khalsa Foundation Australia launches weekly free food drive in Melbourne

MELBOURNE – A tradition from the Sikh faith has expanded beyond the Gurdwara walls and into the streets of Melbourne. It’s called langar and with the support of Victorian Sikh Community, Khalsa Foundation Australia launched their first food van yesterday in the heart of Melbourne to serve free vegetarian food to everyone.

Based on the motto of ‘Guru Nanak’s Langar, No more Hunger‘. the group will be doing weekly distribution of free food to everyone.

The opening of the Food Van was led by Ardas offered by panj pyare at Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Craigieburn.

In an opening speech during the launch ceremony, one of the youth volunteers, Gurdeep Singh said, “One of the three main pillars of Sikhism is to vand ke chakna – to share the fruits of one’s labour with others before considering oneself”.

“Thus living as an inspiration and a support to the entire community regardless of religion, race or colour.”

The group provided hot meals to more than 300 people on its first outing yesterday.

The launching event was attended by Hon. Shadow Multicultural Minister Inga Peulich, Hon. State MP Dee Ryall, Greens Member Alex Bhathal, Liberal Members Amita Gill, Goldy Brar and other respected dignitaries.

Speaking to SinghStation, Kamaldeep Singh, one of the founder members of Khalsa Foundation Australia said, “This is just one way of helping out. It’s our duty to help people whether they’re Christian, Sikh or Muslim, it’s for everyone and we’re just tying to make a difference.”

The group will be distributing free food every Sunday at the corner of Swanston St & Flinders St from 5 to 6pm.
