Moga/Manipur – In the last week, Moga and Manipur experienced one of the worst floods in the recent history in their respective states.
With the Water level in the Sutlej increased to an alarming situation in the Moga district due to heavy rainfall in the catchments areas, water entered many houses of the Sanghera village and other settlements located along the embankments of the river. Besides heavy rainfall, water is being added to the Sutlej from seasonal rivulets Siswan, Budhki, Sagrao, Budha Nullah and the Jasowal drain downstream of the Ropar headworks. More than 3,000 acres of paddy, maize and other crops have been submerged under water.
In Manipur side, cyclone Komen which struck large parts of Bengal, Odisha and Manipur, causing floods and landslides and Manipur witnessed the worst flood in recent history.
The story does not end here as the floods have seen to bridge ‘HUMANITY’ to another level. Along with other voluntary organizations the Sikh community has lend its hand working shoulder to shoulder with the larger community. Prominent groups such as Khalsa Aid which have provided relief to many people suffering from earthquakes, Tsunami etc since its inception.
Manipur which came in the headlines recently over the demand for the introduction of Inner Line Permit System(ILPS) as states like Mizoram,Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh have it.
Khalsa Aid teams have been distributing bottled water in the flooded villages of Moga and Manipur and will continue so as to prevent the spread of water borne diseases.
