Jobless Sikhs held in Amritsar for spying for Pakistan

AMRITSAR: Four days after the arrest of a Pakistani spy Tarwinder Singh, Amritsar police have now arrested another spy Harjinder Singh, an ex-servicemen, and recovered two Pakistani sim cards from his possession and a diary containing information of sensitive installations.

Police have also arrested three cross-border smugglers along with the spy from the border village of Havelian.

SHO, narcotic cell, Amritsar (rural) police, Sanjiv Kumar told TOI on Monday that they had arrested Harinder Singh from Bohalia who allegedly worked for Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI.

Other cross-border smugglers arrested along with Harjinder Singh were Harwant Singh and Gurdev Singh, both residents of Kakkar Kalan, and Gurdit Singh of Chidden village.

The SHO said that police intercepted a car at a naka near Havelian and arrested Harjinder Singh and Harwant Singh while the other two accused were following them on a motorcycle.

Police have also recovered one pistol and six .32 bore cartridges, 250 gram opium and half a kilogram some intoxicant powder from their possession. During preliminary interrogation it was revealed that Harjinder Singh was a Subedar in army but had faced court-martial. He said Harjinder Singh was going to take delivery of some consignment from near the border. He informed that they had also recovered a diary from Harjinder Singh which had the telephone numbers of his Pakistani contacts. “There is some secret information in the diary which we will not disclose at this stage as it could hamper the investigation process,” said Sanjiv.

Harwant Singh said that this was his first attempt to receive goods from Pakistani smugglers and deliver them to Harjinder Singh. “We were to receive Rs 50000 per packet,” he said. Earlier on September 25, State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) had arrested a Pakistani spy and recovered a Pakistani sim card and other objectionable material from his possession.
