NEW DELHI:  In yet another shameful incident a  woman passenger from Bengaluru was verbally & sexually harassed by an immigration officer at the Delhi airport on March 18 when she was flying to Hong Kong via Delhi.
The officer, Vinod Kumar, has been suspended and the home ministry has ordered an inquiry.
The 37-year-old woman says she was traveling to Hong Kong on 18 March when she was asked inappropriate and offensive questions by the officer at Delhi’s IGI airport.
The woman told that Vinod Kumar made “verbal sexual advances” and then followed her even after stamping her passport.
He asked me questions like how many children I had and where I had left them. ‘You young girls have children and then don’t care and leave them with parents and do majja with men. Do you drink, do you smoke, do you eat chicken, do you have fun with men when your husband is not there? Have you done surgery for birth control?’ were the questions asked. The last question was asked four times.”
Even as she stared dumb in shock, the questions got nastier. “I was asked, ‘Do you sleep with other men when your husband is at work? Would you like to have the third child with me because my wife doesn’t want to have a third child? Why are you going alone to Hong Kong, to have fun with your husband, or anyone else? Will you have fun with me? Are you staying with anyone else in Hong Kong?”
The woman says after she returned from Hong Kong with her husband, they complained to a senior officer at the Delhi airport, but all they received was an apology and the officer continued at his post.
The woman’s father-in-law then pushed to have a complaint accepted by the government’s Bureau of Immigration, which is under the home ministry.
