Thousands of local Victorians and visitors from around the globe crowded into Federation Square on Saturday to participate in Victorian Multicultural Festival 2019.
Victoria’s Multicultural Festival is the highlight of Cultural Diversity Week presenting an incredible day of food, music, dance, art, design and ….. Turban Tying.
For many, it was their first time sporting the cultural garb, but the Sikh volunteers tied hundreds of turbans at this event.
The turban stall organised by Khalsa Education Society, sought to educate Australians about Sikhs and their identity while celebrating the cultural diversity of the country.
On Turban Day, we tied turbans regardless of age, colour, gender or race. These are core Sikh values and Australian values that make us Australian Sikhs. Our diversity is our strength,” Gurinder Kaur, stall coordinator said.
It turns out wrapping a turban around a stranger’s head is a real conversation ice-breaker.
As people submit to having five metres of soft, colourful fabric wrapped around their heads, they feel comfortable asking all sorts of questions about the turban and Sikhs.
