Sydney – Hundrerds of Sikhs staged a peace protest at Sydney Olympic Park against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Australia.

The purpose of the protest by the Sikh Diaspora were to raise their Freedom of Speech & Expression against the human rights violations and in-discrimination happening to Minorities in India. The member of the Sikh community felt that the plight of religious minorities in India has not improved, actually it has worsened.

The protest rally was attended by Doctors, IT professionals, businessmen, teachers of the Sikh origin and their families. They held Placards & banners with an appeal to the world leaders and human rights organisations urging them to look into the killings of innocent children and help put an end to the misery of the Sikh community. The demonstrators carrying posters and banners had slogans against Modi. Slogans on placards, banners and posters read ‘Modi India’s Prime Murderer’, ‘Ban RSS’, “Modi Shame Shame” and more like this.

One of the Australian Sikh, Gurpreet Singh Badwal from Sydney said that, “This is something that’s been hyped up to show Modi as a rockstar,”. “He’s been six months in government, I don’t see anything he has done so far for the Indian population, or even for Gujarat, where he’s from. This reception, it’s all fake.”

He chalked Modi’s appeal up to media bias and an exhaustion with the formerly ruling Congress party. “He’s perceived as a hero because all the channels in India have been showing the good parts of the state. But the average person is still suffering,” he said.”

On the other hand, Sikh Council of Australia however disassociated itself from any public protest against the Indian PM.

While speaking to media, Jagdev Singh Bawa, secretary of Sikh Council of Australia said “Nothing is achieved by such protests,” while asserting that his organisation would give a petition to Modi through Indian diplomatic mission.

His sentiment was also shared by a Melburnian car dealer Narinder Singh when he says: “Instead of staging protests against Narendra Modi, we should seek solution by sitting across the table.”

Some locals who were passing by were curious to know about the happenings in Kashmir and 1984 genocide so were briefed by the attendees of the protest rally.
