#GuruNanak550 – Thousands take part in Nagar Kirtan in Craigieburn

CRAIGIEBURN – Thousands of Sikhs from Craigieburn and the surrounding areas participated in the Nagar Kirtan through Craigieburn’s streets on Saturday 16 November.

The Sikh Parade celebrated the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Founder of Sikh Religion. The event was organised by Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Craigieburn.

Up to 7000 people are believed to have attended this event, which was attended by both Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike.

Starting from Olrig Fields, the parade made its way down Windrock Ave to CN Anzac park.

The event opening speech was delivered by Sri Guru Singh Sabha President Sardar Paramjit Singh Grewal.

At Anzac park, all-day programs featuring Kirtan, Gatka, speeches Langar and lots of activities for kids and the entire family were held.

Bhai Bhupinder Singh Ragi Jatha, Bhai Angrez Singh, Bhai Satbir Singh and Bhai Mardana Gurmat Sangeet Academy students recited kirtan at Anzac Park. There was Gatka performance by Damdami Taksal Ranjit Gatka Akhara.

The celebrations featured a number of guests, including Hume City Council Mayor Carly Moore, Councillor Jodi Jackson, State MP Neil Angus and Sr Sargent Ash Dixit.

Sri Durga Arts, Cultural and Educational Centre Management committee also joined the celebrations and congratulated the Sikh community on the eve of Guru Nanak Gurpurab.

An award of excellence for community services was also presented to Social Activist Gurinder Kaur.

The event was closed-off with speech by SGSS secretary S. Gurdeep Singh Matharoo, followed by Ardas.
