GPS leads driver to train tracks

Must Read

AN absent-minded driver brought chaos to a Melbourne train line after following his GPS onto train tracks tonight.

The man was driving towards the level crossing O’Hea St in Coburg just before 7 pm when his GPS instructed to turn left.

He took the directions literally, driving 10 metres along the train tracks before the silver hatchback became stuck.

Dozens of police officers, paramedics and Metro staff who were called to the scene were left shaking their heads while attempting to divert traffic that had banked up for hundreds of metres.

The Upfield Line was temporarily suspended, with passengers on a train travelling into the city stranded between Batman and Coburg stations for more than an hour.

A tow truck was called to the scene to remove the car from the tracks, before the crossing was reopened at about 8.15pm.

Police said the man was forced to pay to have his car towed from the tracks, and will be charged with a number of offences.
