Surrey (July 22, 2014) — The charges against a former leader of a Surrey Sikh temple have been upgraded once again — this time to second-degree murder — after his wife was taken off life support and pronounced dead Sunday afternoon.

The new charges against former Gurdwara Sahib Brookside president Baldev Singh Kalsi, 66, come the morning after his wife Narinder Kaur Kalsi was taken off life support and pronounced dead Sunday afternoon, according to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

Kalsi, 66, was arrested on July 14 and had originally faced charges of aggravated assault in connection to a domestic dispute on July 13. Those charges were later upgraded to attempted murder.

RCMP were called to a home in the 19400-block of 32nd Avenue in Surrey July 13, where they found Kalsi suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Kalsi was removed from his position as president of the temple after he was charged.

Kalsi did not appear in Surrey provincial court last Wednesday as expected, as he sustained injuries from an assault that happened while in custody at Surrey Pretrial Centre Tuesday evening. Kalsi was taken to hospital with facial injuries. A 42-year-old inmate has been identified as a possible suspect. Police do not believe the incident is linked to Kalsi’s alleged involvement in the homicide.

Kalsi is scheduled to appear in Surrey Provicial Court Aug. 6 at 9:30 a.m
