Five people have been injured in a car crash following a police pursuit in Melbourne’s inner north.

Police say they began to follow a black BMW that was speeding on Heidelberg Road at Northcote around 11.25am AEDT today.

A motorcyclist then rode between the two cars, separating them.

“It appears as though that motorcyclist tried to slow down the police vehicle,” Assistant Commissioner Andrew Crisp said.

Police launched a pursuit after the BMW drove through a red light at Jeffrey Street.

After driving through a second red light at Yarra Bend Road, the BMW collided with a silver car, injuring five people.

The black BMW was being pursued by a police highway patrol car, witnesses said.

The driver of the BMW was seriously injured and is in a critical condition, along with the driver of the silver car.

Three other passengers in the BMW have also been taken to hospital.

After the crash, one occupant of the BMW jumped from the black car and onto the back of the motorcycle.

“He then left the scene west along Heidelberg Road with the male rider. He has then jumped off the motorcycle and run off south into parkland,” a police statement said.

The men are yet to be found by police.

A handgun and ammunition was allegedly found in the BMW by police.

The Professional Standards Command will oversee the investigation.
