Mississauga – Malton MP Navdeep Singh Bains has been named Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development as newly-elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his new cabinet were sworn into office today at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.
Earlier he was the first Amritdhari ( Baptised ) Sikh MP to enter into the House of Commons of Canada.
Having served as the MP for Mississauga-Brampton South from 2004 to 2011, Navdeep Singh Bains, 38, a long-time Trudeau friend and advisor, gained extensive experience as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and as the Liberal Critic in a number of portfolios.
Bains, who played a crucial role in Trudeau’s Liberal Party leadership bid in 2013, is a distinguished visiting professor at the Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University and holds an MBA with a specialisation in finance.
Bains, an accountant/financial analyst and visiting professor at Ryerson University, said in a tweet he’s “honoured” to be Canada’s next Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.
Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie also gave a special congratulations to Bains today, saying he will “also represent Mississauga” while in cabinet.
“Members of Council look forward to working with Prime Minister Trudeau, Canada’s new government, and our Mississauga Members of Parliament, to advance the priorities of our residents and local families,” she said in a statement.
At 38, Navdeep Bains is a rising star in the federal Liberal caucus. He’s outspoken, highly regarded and seen by senior Liberals as having the potential, as one put it, “to be the first Canadian prime minister in a turban.”
