End of an era: Ex Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal dies at 95

Former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal passed away on Tuesday at a private hospital in Mohali, aged 95. In the past few days, he had been hospitalized for breathing difficulties.

He is survived by his son Sukhbir Singh Badal, head of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Political Party, and daughter Parneet Kaur who is married to former cabinet minister Adeish Partap Singh Kairon. His wife Surinder Kaur Badal died from cancer in May 2011. Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed their concern for his health before his death.

In its media bulletin, Fortis Hospital issued the following statement: “It is with a heavy heart that we confirm the passing of S Parkash Singh Badal on 18th April 2023. He had been admitted at our Mohali hospital on 16th April for acute exacerbation of bronchial asthma and was under the care of Prof (Dr) Digambar Behera and the Pulmonology and critical care team supported by Cardiology at the time of his death. We extend our deepest condolences to his family.”

From 10am to 12pm on Wednesday, the mortal remains of former Chief Minister Badal will be located at SAD headquarters in Chandigarh. Thereafter, they will travel to his home village of Badal in Muktsar district were final ceremonies will take place on Thursday.

In the last election, he stood for in 2022, he was pitted against rookie AAP candidate Gurmeet Singh Khudian – son of late MP Jagdev Singh Khudian. This marked Badal’s 13th contest for Assembly and ultimately marked the end of a long and record-setting political career. Before this loss, he had undertaken a Thanksgiving tour which ended prematurely. After that time, he mostly occupied his time between his residences either in Badal or in Balasar village of Haryana.
Badal achieved many accomplishments over the years; one such notable feat is becoming the youngest sarpanch from Badal Village back in 1952, followed by becoming the youngest Chief Minister in 1970 and then the oldest chief minister in 2012. On top of that recorded 5 terms as CM (1970-1971; 1977-1980; 1997-2002;2007-2012; 2012-2017), along with stints as a Member of Parliament and Union Agriculture Minister respectively.
