In a unique gesture of inter-faith solidarity and kindness, the Jebel Ali-based Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara invited representatives of the Al Manar Islamic Centre to break their fast on the evening of 22nd June at the gurudwara. A special iftar was organised by the Sikh temple committee that represents the 250,000 odd members of the Sikh community.
A report by Gulfnews.com stated that the iftar was followed by a religious discourse where the scholars of both faiths exchanged ideas on the oneness of humanity. The discourse took place before a gathering of more than 100 people at the gurudwara.
Explaining the importance of fasting during the month of Ramadan, Islamic scholars Adbul Hadi and Ahmad Hamid said, “This month is about mercy, piety, blessing, wisdom and discipline and the goal of fasting is to attain God consciousness”.
Adding to the above, chairman of the gurudwara Surinder Singh Kandhari emphasised that the holy month of Ramadan is an excellent time to observe interfaith harmony and bond with the community. He said, “ Our religion has taught us the importance of the oneness of all human beings and the important role that the community kitchen at the gurudwara plays in bringing people together to share a meal”.
He also added that the iftar which had become an annual feature since last year, is an “excellent opportunity for us to forget our egos and come together and share a meal with our Muslim brothers.”
