A horrific crash in Melbourne’s bayside has claimed the life of one man and left another in hospital.

A green sedan smashed into a stationary tram near the corner of Danks Street and Victoria Avenue in Albert Park about 9am.

The car was swerving on tram lines on Victoria Avenue at an unknown speed before substantial impact with a stationary tram.

The male driver of the vehicle died at the scene, a police spokeswoman said.

The tram driver was taken to The Alfred hospital with minor injuries and suffering shock. There were no passengers on board when the crash happened.

“Paramedics were at the site but unfortunately there was nothing that could done to save the driver of the vehicle,” an Ambulance Victoria spokesman said.

Witnesses saw the car serve across the road as it drove southbound on Victoria Avenue moments before hitting the tram, The Weekly Review reported.

Jeff Crompton, who was driving a tram behind the one involved in the accident, told The Weekly Review he had seen the car driving erratically shortly before the crash.
