Muktsar Sahib (27th Jul 2013): In Local Kotakpura chowk, the situation got complicated when an Amritdhari Gursikh refused a cigarette smoking passenger to get a ride on his Rickshaw. The Rickshaw owner S Mohinder SIngh, 70 yrs old, living in Gobind Nagri earns bread for his family by driving rickshaw. While he was waiting for passengers, a Regional Center professor came to him and started bargaining fair for his destination. After finalizing the fair, he put his bag in the rickshaw and he was just about to lit his cigarette when the Gursikh Rickshaw owner shouted over him in a very roaring tone and asked him to get off his rickshaw.
The professor was very annoyed and was screaming over his shouting, however the Gursikh man said that “My Guru’s horse did not even pass through Tobacco farms , and you are daring to smoke it in a Gursikh’s rickshaw’. At this, the professor got bit embarrassed and went away. Another Gursikh, Varinderpal Singh, who was watching over the whole incident then came to the Rickshaw driver and asked him about the fair he had finalized with the professor. The rickshaw-driver advised Rs. 10, however being impressed with the love, affection and dignity of that Gursikh towards his Guru, Varinderpal Singh gave him some money inspite of several refusals by the Gursikh rickshaw driver.
The story of this Gursikh is definitely a lesson for all Sikh community to be dignified in our deeds and acts, and no matter if it brings us some money, we shouldn’t deviate from Guru’s path. Another concern that comes out of this news is that, its really sad to see a 70 yrs old Gursikh driving a rickshaw. We should definitely be helping such Gursikhs to lead a comfortable life at such life by donating part of our dasvandh. We urge everyone to do send us the contact information of this Gursikh, so that we all can help him and the family in whatever way Guru ji will bless us with.
