Current Tense Situation in Punjab – How is Australian Sikh Sangat Reacting?

Australia – Protesting the alleged sacrilege of the saroop of Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji in different corners of Punjab & the brutal killing of protesting Sikh brothers, Sikh Sangat from all over Australia also came forward and resented over this incident.

In a gathering of major Gurdwaras across Victoria, Sydney, South Australia, Sikh Sangat took several key decisions in relation to the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib in Punjab.

PERTH PROTEST

Perth sangat held a protest at Supreme Garden which was attended in big numbers by Sikh Sangat. Men, women and Elderlies all showed their presentation in the protest. Sangat also signed a petition which will be submitted to Indian Consulate in Perth.

Other than that, a special diwaan was held at Bennett springs Gurudwara sahib on Sunday 18th October as a mark of protest towards ongoing sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib ji and the killing of innocent Sikhs.

MELBOURNE PROTEST

In Melbourne, a Sikh gathering was called off by Gurdwara Sahib in Craigieburn to discuss the present situation in Punjab. Sikh organizations & Gurdwaras all over Victoria were invited to take part in the discussion and address to the Sangat. There were lot of valuable suggestions that came from sangat and on the basis of those resolutions were passed later on.

Gurdwara Committee also announced a contribution of $10000 AUD for the help of victim families and other projects related to the current situation. Khalsa Education Society Australia has also raised $3000 for this purpose and will work in conjuction with Gurdwara management for this purpose. Australian Sikh Support has delivered Rs 50000 each to the families of those killed in this attack.

In Melbourne, a protest was held at Federation Square on Sunday 18th October. Hundereds of Sikh Sangat took part in this peaceful tribute to those killed and injured in Kotkapura protests. The protesters also condemned the Punjab State Government’s inaction so far. They were holding banners demanding strict action against those involved in the desecration.

ADELAIDE PROTEST

In Adelaide, Sikh Sangat gathered in large numbers at Gurdwara Sarbat Khalsa in Prospect on 17th October 2015 and a seminar was held to share the wrongful activities happening in Punjab. During the seminar, the following topics were discussed by various speakers:

  • Dera Jhootha Sauda wrongful activities
  • Beadbi of Guru Granth Sahib ji in Punjab
  • Sikh leadership & role of Political Parties
  • Police attrocites
  • Peaceful protests
  • Loss of Innocent lives
  • Future strategies

Following discussions all over Australia, the following resolutions have been passed anonymously by Sikh Sangat:

  • Support for Sarbat Khalsa by sending representatives from Australia
  • Refusal to accept the appointed Jathedars
  • Complete boycott of Jathedars, SGPC, Akali Dal badal members and all anti-Sikh politicians
  • Financial Help to the victims of those killed or injured in Police Attack
  • Create a Worldwide organization to represent the diaspora

Besides this, a media release has been prepared to bring this news across other communities in Australia as well which will soon be shared with Sikh Sangat.
