Brisbane – 12 December 2013 – Yesterday a delegation of Brisbane Sikh Sangat along with committee members of Gurdwara Sahib Brisbane went to meet QLD Department of Foreign Affairs to give petitions with a cover letter explaining the current situation of Sikh prisoners in India. The petition stated about the plight of Sikh prisoners who have been kept in various Indian jails even after they have fulfilled their prison sentence term.
Queensland Department of Foreign Affairs expressed real interest and compassion in the case and accepted the petition for looking further into it.
Prior to this, there was a holy sikh congrgation organised at Brisbane Sikh Temple on Sunday, 8th December praying for the well-being and in-soldiarity of Bhai Gurbaksh Singh (who has been sitting on hunger strike for Sikh prisoners now for almost 30 days) and the whole Sikh panth.
Many Sikh volunteers collected signatures from the community from all Brisbane Sikh temples and Murwillumba Sikh temple which was later handed to the Queensland Department of Foreign Affairs.
Brisbane Sikh Sangat has also invited Sikhs from other states to take initiative for similar actions so as to bring this Sikh discrimination issue strongly before the Australian Government to raise their voice before Indian Government.
