AMRITSAR: In an embarrassment to the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP government, the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today got a big jolt when a close confident of Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia, the district president of SAD and Chairman of Punjab Energy Development (PEDA) Upkar Singh Sandhu resigned from all the posts in protest against sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib.
“I was shocked and pained at the series of incidents of sacrilege of holy book in the various parts of Punjab,” Sandhu said.
He has sent his resignations from two posts respectively to SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal and Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.
Sandhu said that the killing of two innocent Sikhs youth who died during the police firing when they were staging peaceful protests in Punjab hurt him severely.
Sandhu cited one of the reasons of his resignation, the controversial edicts issued from Akal Takht and later suspension of Panj Piaras.
He said that in the light of present painful circumstances he quit all the posts with immediate effect and copies of resignation were forwarded to the authorities concerned including Deputy Chief Minister Punjab Sukhbir Singh Badal.
Earlier Sukjhdev Singh Bhaur Vice President of SGPC, about 15 SGPC memebrs, Mohan Lal Banga SAD MLA and member of Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) had resigned from his post in protest against the sacrilege.
