Faridkot – A local court today sent Rupinder Singh and his brother Jaswinder Singh, the two accused in the sacrilege case, to judicial custody till November 9.
After six days of their interrogation in police custody, the Faridkot police today produced the brothers in the court. The police did not seek more time to question them.
With some injuries on his spinal cord, Rupinder Singh was brought to the court on a wheelchair. A number of Sikh supporters were present to express their solidarity with the arrested brothers.
A heavy police force was deployed in the court complex. The family members of the accused were allowed to meet them.
Rupinder asked the judge why he had been arrested. When told about the offence, Rupinder claimed himself to be a baptised and a devout Sikh. He sought to convey to the court that it was wrong to accuse him of desecration. The court asked him to give his defence at the time of trial of the case.
The police today made an amendment to the FIR, registered against the brothers. They replaced Section 295 with 295A of the IPC. While Section 295 deals with destroying, damaging or defiling any place of worship, or any object held sacred by any class of persons with the intention of insulting the religion of any class of persons, the Section 295A deals with outraging the religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs.
