Between 300 and 400 protesters gathered in front of the Indian High Commission in Canberra to protest the detention of Sikh political prisoners from Indian jails Monday, January 12, 2015.

Protesters from Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne rallied in Canberra on a Hot Monday to demand the release of Sikhs who are being illegally detained in Indian jails.

In a protest in front of the Indian High Commission, the crowd of about 300 waved flags and signs, chanted and spoke out in anger against the Indian government.

The rally was organized to support Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa, who has been on a hunger strike in India since Nov. 14 to demand the release of seven Sikhs who continue to be detained after completing sentences.

Another protest was organised by Sikh community in Perth at Supreme Court Gardens to stand up against injustice against illegally detained Sikh prisoners. The rally in Perth was supported by Bayswater Gurdwara Committee.

The rally marked the 60th day of Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa’s hunger strike.

Although Sikhs are a religious minority in India, Sikhism has numerous followers elsewhere. As a result, rallies and hunger strikes supporting Khlasa have been occurring all across the world.

Sydney Sikhs have been staging a “chain hunger strike” since November. The strike takes place each day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Gurdwara Sahib, Revesby in Sydney.
