The Australian government has cancelled the visa of Khizar Hayat, who pleaded guilty to desecrating the Sikh Pothi, and sharing the act on TikTok. The incident, which sparked outrage within the Sikh community, was met with swift legal and government action.
Hayat, a Pakistani national, had posted videos online showing the desecration, an act viewed as deeply offensive to Sikhs worldwide. The government’s decision to revoke his visa comes after mounting pressure from Sikh leaders and community members who demanded accountability for his actions.
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke confirmed the visa cancellation, stating that Hayat’s actions breached community standards and caused significant distress. “There is no place in Australia for those who spread hate and target religious communities,” the Minister said.
The Sikh community in Australia, which has a significant presence, welcomed the government’s decision, emphasising that such acts of disrespect towards sacred religious texts undermine harmony and multicultural values.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting cultural and religious sensitivities in a diverse society like Australia. Hayat now faces deportation, pending further legal proceedings.
