NEW DELHI: Arrested self-styled godman Asaram Bapu’s son Narayan Sai, who is wanted in a rape case in Surat, was arrested by police from the Delhi-Haryana border on Wednesday, according to TV reports.
Narayan Sai had been on the run for the past 58 days.
Sai was arrested in a joint operation between Delhi and Gujarat police.
Surat police had registered two complaints — one against tainted religious leader Asaram and the other against his son Sai of rape, sexual assault and illegal confinement as alleged by two sisters on October 6.
The younger of the two sisters, who is 30 years old, filed the complaint against Sai, accusing him of repeated sexual assault between 2002 and 2005, when she was living at Surat ashram.
Police sources said that the Delhi Police crime branch officials, who were tracking the whereabouts of Sai’s driver Ramesh for the last few days, managed to zero on his location.
The police, according to one account, conducted a raid on a house but Sai and his accomplices tried to flee in a SUV.
However, the police were able to intercept them at a short distance.
Sai was wearing a saffron headgear, which is worn by many Sikhs in Punjab.
He was wearing a T-shirt, pants and a jacket to camouflage his appearance and avoid arrest.
