Giving up the idea of contesting the election against CM Parkash Badal from the Lambi assembly segment, Ardasia Bhai Balbir Singh has now joined Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday at sector 36, Convention centre in Chandigarh.
Confirming the development, Balbir Singh said he needed an appropriate platform to voice his concern against the Badal government’s failure to curb a series of sacrilege instances of Guru Granth Sahib.
Bhai Balbir Singh said that he refused ‘siropa’ to Badal because he was upset over repeated incidents of desecration of Guru Granth Sahib, an AAP release quoted him as saying.
“My protest was against failure of government to arrest those guilty of sacrilege,” he said.
He also said that he would work to maintain the respect of Guru Granth Sahib and AAP leadership has given him an assurance to punish those guilty of sacrilege of the holy scripture.
He said that every Sikh or anybody who follows the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, feels the pain of sacrilege incidents.
Before formally joining AAP, Bhai Balbir Singh had earlier announced his support to Jarnail Singh who is contesting against Parkash Singh Badal from Lambi constituency.
“My sole motive was to dethrone Badal. I had earlier thought of contesting the Lambi seat against Badal as an Independent, but after getting feedback from the Sikh ‘sangat’ that it could indirectly pass on advantage to Badal, I rolled back my decision. After much thought, I decided to join AAP, which has a ‘clean image’. Taking steps to curb sacrilege incidents and punishing the guilty is part of the AAP agenda”, he said.
Sanjay Singh, national General Secretary of AAP and in-charge of Punjab and Gurpreet Singh Waraich, AAP state convener, welcomed Bhai Balbir Singh into the party fold.
