August 27, 2013 – Skilled migrant applications have more than doubled following the introduction of a 90-day Immigration SA change program.
Manufacturing, Innovation and Trade Minister, Tom Kenyon said that more than 360 applications at an average of 66 a week had been received since the project began in May this year.
“This compares to an average of 28 a week between January and May this year,” Mr Kenyon said.
“The State Government has been working with local business in reviewing its state migration criteria and requirements under the direction of the Department for Manufacturing, Innovation, Trade, Resources and Energy and the Department of the Premier and Cabinet.
“By doing this we’re aiming to increase the number of skilled and business migrants entering the state,” Mr Kenyon said.
“Skilled business migrants create further investment opportunities, jobs, greater industry capability and economic growth.”
“The 90-day change program is enhancing South Australia’s state application criteria with the intention of broadening eligibility for potential migrants and South Australian employers.
“The project – part of Change@SouthAustralia – is the first step in a long-term strategy to more effectively participate in national programs for attracting permanent skilled and business migrants,” My Kenyon said.
“Our 90-day project has meant South Australia’s state evidence criteria are now better aligned with the federal Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
“For example, our validity dates for English language and skills assessments have been extended which will reduce refusals due to expired documentation.
“Other achievements to date include the revamped Immigration SA website which is the gateway for people from all over the world who wish to call South Australia home.
“The refreshed website site is easier to navigate, provides up-to-date information about application processing times and boosts South Australia’s identity.
“It’s essential that people considering a move to SA or for those who have just arrived to have the support and information they need to make the transition as easy as possible,” Mr Kenyon said.
Change@SouthAustralia aims to prepare South Australia’s public sector for the challenges and opportunities of the future through all of government culture change and values-based leadership and management principles.
