A 21-year-old Indian-origin man today died after falling from 26th floor of a high-rise apartment building here.

He was a member of a Punjab dance group based in Melbourne.

The Age newspaper quoted a Nightclub owner Gary Vohra told Fairfax Media he had met Mr Sandhu and his friends for drinks at Billboards on Russell Street on Friday night where the group were seeing a Bollywood singer perform.

Mr Vohra said he believed Mr Sandhu had gone back to a Southbank apartment with several friends after the show on Saturday morning, and had tragically slipped on the balcony railing.

“From what I heard, Rehmat went to sit on the balcony railing, and it was wet and he’s gone over,”  Mr Vohra said.

Residents living in the tower were also shocked to hear of the death. One sixth floor resident Rob Taylor said he had been woken up when he heard a “thud” in the middle of the night.

Mr Taylor said he got out of bed to investigate the noise but couldn’t see anything in the dark and later heard sirens.

Mr Taylor, who has lived in the complex for four years said the building was frequented by young people who came to party on weekends at the nearby nightclubs and Crown Casino.

Police investigators have spoken to several people who were in the apartment at the time.

A police spokeswoman said the man’s death was not being treated as suspicious, and police would prepare a report for the coroner.
