Punjabi student crushed to death by tractor near Innisfail in QLD

Innisfail – An international student from India, working as banana farmer died south of Innisfail, after it’s believed he was trying to negotiate a steep incline when his tractor rolled over and he was crushed under it on Tuesday afternoon.

According to local community activist Manjit Boparai, 25-year-old Jatinder Singh Sachdeva was working at a banana farm in Innisfail. He suffered significant injuries and died at the scene.

Jatinder originally belonged to village Golewala in Faridkot district in Punjab and came to Australia with his wife, Amandeep Kaur nearly three years ago on a student visa. He was working as a tractor operator at a farm owned by Onkar Singh.

On Thursday, his body was released from the Cairns Base Hospital after a postmortem examination and has been handed over to the funeral director.

The local Punjabi community in Cairns mourns the loss of young boy and is arranging for the transportation of dead body to India. The body is expected to reach India by 22nd November.

Jatinder was the only son of his parents and his sister was due to get married on 20th November. His family in India was not initially informed about this but they have been informed of this tragic loss now.

WorkSafe Queensland is investigating the incident in conjunction with the local police and will prepare a report for the coroner.
