Punjabi Film Toofan Singh is having tough times getting a certificate from the censor board. The highly anticipated release of Punjabi film Toofan Singh on July 15, 2016 has been cancelled after the Indian censor board chairman refused clearance following the initial five-member censor board failing to reach a consensus upon release.
Toofan Singh is a semi-biographical story based on Bhai Jugraj Singh Toofan and his pursuit for justice and equality for all. The story charters the journey of survival of a young boy growing up in Punjab during the turbulent 1980’s. Devastated by the deteriorating law and order situation, Toofan Singh is forced to fight against corruption, crime and brutality in order to protect society regardless of religion, caste or creed. The life and heroics of Bhai Jugraj Singh Toofan cemented his name in modern day Punjabi folklore amongst all sections of society. Over one million people of all faiths attended the funeral when he lost his life to Police bullets at the tender age of nineteen.
The film is the first feature film and directorial debut of Baghal Singh and stars renowned Punjabi singer Ranjit Bawa in his acting debut.
“We have worked extremely hard and responsibly to ensure Toofan Singh meets the highest standards of Indian cinema. This film is an inspirational and fact based story which will serve to clear misconceptions and unite communities about a little understood period of Punjab history. Although we are disappointed that the censor has taken these steps, we are confident that truth will triumph and will take all measures necessary to ensure this is the case” stated Baghal Singh.
The film will now be assessed by a fifteen-member board of the Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC) following which Royal Cine Arts will decide upon the appropriate course of action.
Ranjit Bawa also posted on his official Facebook page about this news.
