Mufti govt releases Top Political prisoner Masarat Alam from jail


SRINAGAR: Senior Hurriyat (G) leader and Muslim League president, Masrat Alam Bhat was released after four and a half years Saturday. He had been languishing in jail since October 18, 2010.

masrat-alam-bhatReports said that earlier in the day Deputy Commissioner Jammu issued the release orders of Masrat.

Masrat was lodged in district jail Kupwara for some time under a case registered in a Jammu police station.

Masrat was brought from Kupwara by a Srinagar police team reports said adding where from he will be handed over to his family. Sources said that the police team with Masrat was on way to Srinagar when the reports last came in.

Masrat was slapped PSA 6 times since his arrest in 2010 and every Act was quashed by the state high court, however, he was not released.

Administration used to re-arrest Masrat Sahab after every release order,” Muslim League spokesman said.

Soon after the news about the release of Masrat broke, hundreds of people reached his residence in the old town to congratulate him.

On the other hand BJP’s youth wing chief Ravinder Raina said,  “Masrat Alam is a threat to the national security. He is not a political prisoner, but a terrorist. The BJP will never tolerate his release”.
